Orlando Pirates had to settle for a draw in their CAF Champions League match against Stade d’Abidjan, which ended in a 1-1 stalemate at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny. Despite the disappointing result, they moved to the top of Group C with Al Ahly and CR Belouizdad still to play their match.
The Soweto Giants, who were champions in the same city in 1995, came back to the historic venue as one of the two teams still undefeated in their group. They were aiming to reach seven points at the halfway mark of the group stage, eyeing the top position. However, missed opportunities hindered their progress, especially in the first half when they dominated the game.
Makhehleni Makhaula and Relebohile Mofokeng both had chances to score within the first 15 minutes, but their shots missed the target. Despite being busy, the Ivorian goalkeeper, Drissa Bamba, managed to keep the Pirates at bay.
With seconds left in the first half, Makgopa converted a penalty kick, giving Pirates the lead. However, Abidjan equalized nine minutes into the second half with a goal from Ousmane Méité.
Pirates had a chance to regain the lead in the 58th minute, but Bamba saved Makgopa’s shot. Abidjan looked more dangerous in the second half, coming close to scoring a winner.
The match ended in a draw, with both teams missing late chances to win. Pirates held on to secure a point on the road.
